Sir Michael Mormot asks Hári to play a significant role in the government’s review of health inequalities
Sir Michael Marmot wrote to me on 13th February 2009 to ask me to play a significant role in a major, independent review of strategies to reduce health inequalities.
On 6 November 2008 the Prime Minister announced that Professor Sir Michael Marmot had been asked to Chair an independent review to propose the most effective strategies for reducing health inequalities in England from 2010.
The Review follows the publication in 2008 of ‘Closing the Gap in a Generation’ the report from the Global Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH), also chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot. The Review will draw on the approach and recommendations which emerged from the CDSH.
This Review comes some ten years after publication of the previous Inquiry into Health Inequalities in England, chaired by Sir Donald Acheson. The Inquiry recommendations provided the cornerstone for the national health inequalities strategy, Tackling Health Inequalities: a Programme for Action
I have been asked to work on a committee that will recommend implementation plans for achieving greater equity in
- the determinants of health
- health outcomes associated with these determinants
The Committee will assess the best systems, policies and levers for delivery across government, local agencies and other sectors to recommend
